Dutch Watchdog Investigates Snapchat Over Vape Access for Children
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has launched an inquiry into Snapchat following allegations that the app allows minors to purchase vapes.
The move comes after the Youth Smoking Prevention Foundation filed a complaint, claiming Snapchat fails to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA). In a controlled test, the foundation had 11 children attempt to buy vapes through the platform and identified 615 active sellers.
According to ACM board member Manon Leijten, creating a safe online environment for young people is a legal and moral responsibility:
“Platforms like Snapchat must take action to stop illegal products being sold on their services.”
The ACM will now examine whether Snapchat has met its DSA obligations. If not, the platform could face fines, binding instructions, or ongoing penalty payments.
Snapchat is classified as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP), meaning it falls under direct European Commission oversight. ACM confirmed it is coordinating with EU regulators during the process.
The authority said it cannot give a timeframe for the investigation and will not share further details until the case advances.
