Alright, first spring in the new place and the pool’s been closed all winter. I need to open it up but I have no idea what that actually costs or whether I should DIY it or call a service. Got quotes from two pool companies and they were wildly different, which made me trust neither. Before I commit, I want a sanity check on what pool opening should reasonably run. How do you all handle the spring open without getting fleeced?

Two wildly different quotes is exactly why a baseline helps – hard to spot a fleece without one. Before you commit to either company, plug your details into a pool opening cost calculator. I used the one at Pool Cost Planner – it estimates opening by pool type, service level, cover removal, size, and add-ons, and compares basic vs full-service and inground vs above-ground. That gave me a realistic range for those quotes. Tip: check what “opening” includes at each company – one may bundle cover removal and a chemical balance while the other doesn’t, which explains the wild gaps. And run the basic vs full-service split; a partial DIY open cuts it a lot.
