Received a letter from Law Offices of D. Scott Carruthers, APLC – what now?
So I got a letter in the mail today from this law office and it says I owe a debt that I honestly don’t even recognize. The letter says I have 30 days to dispute it, but the wording is pretty intimidating and makes it sound like they’re about to take legal action against me if I don’t pay up right away.
I’ve been reading up on this and apparently they’re supposed to provide something called a debt validation notice, which should include the original creditor’s name, the exact amount, and my right to dispute. I think my letter has some of that, but I’m still really confused about what my next step should be.
Is it better to just call them and try to work something out, or should I send a written request for debt validation first? I’ve heard that if they can’t actually prove the debt is mine, they have to stop contacting me about it. But I’m nervous about ignoring it and ending up with a default judgment against me.
Has anyone here dealt with this specific firm before? How did you handle it? Any tips on what to say or not say if I do call them? Really stressed about this and could use some practical advice from people who’ve been through it.
