Orb of Chance vs Orb of Alchemy — Which Should You Use and When in PoE 2?
Choosing between an Orb of Chance and an Orb of Alchemy is a decision every PoE 2 player faces constantly, especially during the campaign and early endgame. Both currencies turn white items into something more powerful, but they serve very different purposes. Understanding when to use each one can save you a huge amount of resources and help you make smarter crafting decisions as the poe 2 currency economy evolves throughout the league.
The Orb of Alchemy is the more straightforward of the two. It instantly transforms a Normal (white) item into a full Rare with several random affixes. This provides an immediate power boost, especially when you’ve found a strong base item that suits your build. During the campaign, using an Orb of Alchemy on a high-armor chest, an evasion helmet with good implicit stats, or a fast weapon base can significantly smooth your progression. You’re not gambling—you’re guaranteeing a Rare item that will likely help you survive or deal more damage. That reliability makes alchs an essential item for leveling, especially for players who don’t want to rely solely on RNG drops.
The Orb of Chance, in contrast, is far more unpredictable. It can upgrade a white item into Magic, Rare, or even Unique—but that last possibility is extremely rare. Its value comes from the potential to create high-impact Uniques tied to specific bases. This makes Chance orbs a gambling tool rather than a practical progression item. During leveling, using them is usually wasteful unless you’re specifically chasing a leveling Unique that fits your build. Most players prefer to save their Chance orbs until they reach maps, where better-quality bases start dropping and Unique-targeting becomes much more meaningful.
So which one should you use, and when? The rule of thumb is simple: use Orbs of Alchemy for reliability and Orbs of Chance for opportunity. If your goal is to upgrade your gear immediately, especially in the early game, Alchemy orbs give guaranteed value. Their consistency makes them one of the most commonly used pieces of poe 2 currency for simply increasing character power without thinking too deeply about RNG.
On the other hand, once you hit the mid-game, start collecting strong bases—high-level wands, staves, bows, boots, or body armors—and save your Chance orbs for when you encounter bases associated with expensive or build-defining Uniques. By stacking your Chance orbs and reserving them for targeted rolls, you maximize the long-term payoff. Some players even wait for specific trade windows when they buy poe 2 currency or bases outright to combine with their hoarded Chance orbs during unique-hunting sessions.
